The panel will discuss recent legislative and regulatory developments affecting the federal income tax treatment of life insurance and annuity products. Topics will include the CARES Act, which provides relief with respect to IRAs and other qualified savings vehicles in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SECURE Act, which among other things changed the required minimum distribution rules for IRAs and similar products, and the HEROES Act, which has not been enacted but would change the rules under Code section 7702 regarding the federal tax definition of a “life insurance contract.”
